Benjamin Bratt was born on December 16, 1963 to mother Eldy who was a nurse and political activist and father Peter Bratt Sr. who was a sheet metal worker. He was the 3rd child among the 5 children of his parents. At the age of 6 his mother took him and his other siblings to participate in the 1969 Native American occupation of Alcatraz which was led by young people from San Francisco. It raised national awareness of issues facing Native Americans, and attracted participants from across the country.

Benjamin Bratt attended Lowell High School which was located in San Francisco where he was also a member of the Lowell Forensic Society. In 1986 he earned a B.F.A at the University of California, Santa Barbara where he joined Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. Later he went to American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco to study M.F.A program where he left before receiving his degree to star in the 1987 television film Juarez.
