Dana Delany or Dana Welles Delany (born March 13, 1956) is an American actress. She gained fame for her role as Colleen McMurphy on the ABC television drama China Beach (1988-1991) for which she won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 1989 and 1992. Additionally, she is known for her appearances in the films Light Sleeper (1992), Tombstone (1993), Exit to Eden (1994), The Margaret Sanger Story (1995), Fly Away Home (1996), True Women (1997), and Wide Awake (1998). Delany also provided the voice of Lois Lane in Superman: The Animated Series, Justice League and Justice League Unlimited.

Early Life and Education

Dana Delany was born in New York City to Mary Burnett Welles, an interior designer, and John Joseph Delany, CEO of Coyne & Delany Co. a major manufacturer of flushometers and flush valves in the USA. She has a sister Corey and a brother Sean. Delany was raised Roman Catholic and has expressed her early desire to pursue acting, attributing it to wanting attention from her parents as a child.

After growing up in Stamford Connecticut she attended Phillips Academy in Andover Massachusetts for her senior year and was part of the school’s first coeducational class. During her time at Andover she wrote an op-ed about her experience and played the lead role of Nellie Forbush in the school’s production of South Pacific.

Delany then pursued a major in theater at Wesleyan University, where she appeared in various productions including María Irene Fornés’ feminist play Fefu and Her Friends. She also worked in summer stock productions during vacations before graduating in 1978. In a later interview she revealed her struggles with eating disorders during this time in her life.

Career Beginning in 1980s

After graduating from college, she began acting in New York City appearing in daytime soap operas such as Love of Life and As the World Turns. To support herself she also acted in commercials including one for Wisk laundry detergent. She received critical acclaim for her performance in the Broadway show A Life and in Nicholas Kazan’s off Broadway production Blood Moon. She then moved to Hollywood and landed guest roles in TV shows like Moonlighting, Magnum, P.I. and Thirtysomething.

She was rejected for the lead role of nurse Colleen McMurphy for not being “pretty enough”. However she eventually won the role after cutting her long hair into a bob for her next audition, which caught the producers’ attention. Her role in China Beach, which aired from 1988 to 1991 brought her significant media attention. She received two Primetime Emmy Awards two additional Primetime Emmy Award nominations and two Golden Globe Award nominations for her performance. The show concluded after four seasons in 1991.
